Newcastle United have reached a deal worth up to €41m (£34m) to sign highly rated Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, in a move that marks a dramatic twist in the 20-year-old’s burgeoning career.
Big-money switch from Monaco to Premier League
The Franco-Guinean defensive midfielder is travelling to England to complete a medical ahead of finalising a five-year contract with the Magpies, according to reports first detailed by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Monaco and Newcastle have agreed a package that includes bonuses and a sell-on clause, under which the Ligue 1 club will receive 15% of any future transfer fee if Bamba is sold on.
Bamba had been widely expected to remain at his boyhood club and continue his development into a second full season in the Principality. However, what has been described as a particularly attractive financial proposal from Newcastle reshaped Monaco’s stance in recent days.
The move comes despite the midfielder still having six years left on his Monaco contract, which was due to run until 2030.
Howe’s project convinces rising star
Bamba has, sources say, quickly reached agreement on personal terms with Newcastle’s hierarchy. The 20-year-old has been persuaded by the sporting project presented by head coach Eddie Howe, who is seeking to strengthen his options in central midfield.
Talks between the player’s camp and the Premier League side progressed smoothly, with Monaco formally giving their approval for the transfer to be completed once the medical is passed.
Described in France as one of last season’s revelations in Ligue 1, Bamba’s market value had recently been estimated at around €18m – significantly below the fee now being paid, underlining how highly Newcastle rate his potential.
Breakthrough season at Monaco
Born in Blois, Bamba came through Monaco’s academy and broke into the first team last season, making 25 competitive appearances for the club.
His displays at the base of midfield – combining ball-winning ability with composure in possession – quickly attracted attention from scouts across Europe. Monaco had initially been expected to build around him after the departure of more experienced squad members was anticipated this summer.
Instead, the club have opted to cash in, securing a sizeable transfer fee while retaining a financial interest in his future through the 15% sell-on clause.
Medical imminent before five-year deal
Bamba is due to undergo his medical examinations in England in the coming hours. Should he pass the routine checks, he will officially sign a five-year contract with Newcastle, tying him to St James’ Park until 2029.
The move will see him join a growing contingent of young talents recruited under Newcastle’s ownership as the club looks to cement itself among the Premier League’s leading sides and push for regular European qualification.
For Monaco, the transfer represents a major profit on a homegrown player and provides additional funds for their own squad rebuilding – but it also brings an abrupt end to the stay of one of last season’s breakout performers in Ligue 1.
