Morocco international defender Nayef Aguerd is set to join Real Sociedad on loan from Marseille with an obligation to buy, according to reports from Foot Mercato.
The 30-year-old centre-back is expected to become one of several departures from Marseille this summer as the Ligue 1 club look to raise funds and comply with the requirements of French football’s financial watchdog, the DNCG.
Aguerd’s exit would help Marseille’s efforts to balance their squad finances, with an agreement reportedly reached for the former West Ham United defender to move to San Sebastian.
The deal is expected to include a permanent five-year contract with Real Sociedad once the purchase obligation is activated at the end of the loan spell.
The move will mark a return to familiar surroundings for Aguerd, who previously spent time at Real Sociedad on loan during his spell with West Ham.
The Moroccan defender joined West Ham from Rennes in 2022 and was part of the Hammers side that won the UEFA Europa Conference League before later moving to Marseille.
Aguerd’s experience in both the Premier League and La Liga has made him an attractive option for Sociedad, who are looking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season.
