Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is considering a tactical reshuffle for Sunday’s Clasico against Barcelona, with Federico Valverde potentially starting in an advanced position on the right rather than at full-back.
Real Madrid travel to Spotify Camp Nou for the 10th round of La Liga, knowing they must avoid defeat to prevent falling nine points behind Barcelona.
The visitors will be without Vinicius Junior, who is suspended, while Rodrygo Goes, Raul Asencio and Ferland Mendy are unavailable because of injuries. Although all three injured players have shown signs of improvement, none is expected to feature.
According to AS, Mourinho is examining the option of using Uruguay international Valverde further forward. The plan would allow him to support Arda Guler and Aurelien Tchouameni in midfield while also making use of his ability to drive quick attacks.
Under that system, Denzel Dumfries would operate behind Valverde at right-back. He would form the defensive line with Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen, while Marc Cucurella would complete the back four on the left.
Guler is expected to retain his place in midfield, where his role as the team’s main creative outlet is considered important. Tchouameni would provide greater physical strength alongside him, with the pair set to operate together in that area once again.
The two players have started together in that position only once so far. That match ended with Real Madrid beating Sevilla 4-1 last week.
Jude Bellingham would play centrally in the attacking line, tasked with supplying Kylian Mbappe and Yan Diomande. Diomande has enjoyed an excellent run of goalscoring form ahead of the meeting with Barcelona.
Mourinho would also have several options on the bench should he need to adjust the game. Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger could strengthen the defence, while Bernardo Silva would offer greater control in possession.
Ibrahim Diaz, Endrick and Espi would provide further attacking alternatives.
Real Madrid’s expected starting XI is:
Goalkeeper: Lunin
Defenders: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella
Midfielders: Arda Guler, Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde
Forwards: Jude Bellingham, Yan Diomande, Kylian Mbappe
