Mourinho plays down Vinícius-Diomandé debate for Real Madrid starting role

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has dismissed suggestions that Ivorian youngster Yan Diomandé could automatically take Vinícius Júnior’s place in the starting lineup, insisting that competition for places will be determined by the team’s needs.

Diomandé’s recent performances have sparked debate among Real Madrid supporters about whether the summer signing could challenge the Brazilian for a regular starting role, particularly after impressing with his contribution to the team’s defensive structure.

Vinícius is currently suspended for Real Madrid’s next two matches and could return for the game against Celta Vigo on November 21.

His absence has brought renewed attention to Diomandé’s performances, with discussions emerging over whether the team looks more balanced when the Ivorian features instead of the Brazilian.

However, Mourinho has rejected the suggestion that Real Madrid’s overall balance depends on leaving Vinícius out of the starting eleven.

“I care a lot about Vinícius, I want this suspension to end quickly because I need him for the team, it doesn’t mean he’s going to be a STARTER but he’s another great player we’re going to have.”

“Saying we need him doesn’t necessarily mean he will start every single match. I don’t see that as a problem, either,” he added.

The comments offer a clear indication of how Mourinho intends to approach selection as Real Madrid seek to maintain balance across different phases of the game.

For Diomandé, the debate represents an opportunity to strengthen his position in the squad through consistent performances.

His recent displays, particularly his work without the ball, have attracted attention and given supporters reason to discuss his potential role in the team.
