Pitso Mosimane used Themba Zwane in central midfield during South Africa’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea, saying the tactical switch was driven by a lack of experienced options in the middle of the pitch.
Zwane came on for the final 11 minutes as Bafana Bafana comfortably completed their AFCON 2027 qualifying win in Cairo. With the result already secured, the 36-year-old had limited time to influence the match in his unfamiliar position.
Mosimane said after the game that injuries and unavailability had left him with few recognised central midfielders. He explained that South Africa were short of options against Egypt, prompting him to consider moving Zwane into a deeper role.
The coach also listed the midfielders who were unavailable for selection.
“We don’t have Teboho (Mokoena). We don’t have (Thalente) Mbatha. We’ve lost Jayden (Adams), and we don’t have (Bathusi) Aubaas. It is really unfortunate for us,” Mosimane said.
Sphephelo Sithole was consequently the only experienced central midfield option available to the team. Mosimane therefore turned to Zwane to provide additional cover in that area during the closing stages.
The cameo produced modest numbers. Zwane received a 6.2 FotMob rating after making five touches, although he completed all four of his attempted passes for a 100% pass accuracy.
He did not attempt a shot and recorded no goal, assist or chance created. His attacking statistics included 0.00 xG and 0.00 xA.
Zwane also finished the appearance without a tackle, interception or ball recovery. He was not involved in either a ground or aerial duel before the final whistle.
Although his contribution was limited, the decision to introduce Zwane underlined the selection problem confronting Mosimane ahead of South Africa’s next international assignment.
With Mokoena, Mbatha, Adams and Aubaas unavailable, the Bafana Bafana coach may have to continue using unconventional solutions in central midfield.
