Morocco’s Olympic team were held to a 1-1 draw by Mali in a friendly in Rabat as they continue their preparations for the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Jamel Ait Ben Idir’s side included several players who have already been called up by Morocco’s senior team, including Othmane Maamma, Ismael Baouf and Youssef Lekhedim. Mali also fielded a competitive squad, with Lens defender Souleymane Sagnan and Nantes midfielder Sekou Doucoure starting, while Barcelona prospect Ibrahim Diarra began on the bench.
Despite Morocco’s strong line-up, it was Mali who took the lead in the 28th minute.
Baouf’s harmless-looking back-pass caused problems for goalkeeper Yanis Benchaouch, who delayed his clearance and was dispossessed by Aboubacar Diakite. The Al-Hazem forward then rolled the ball into an empty net to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.
Morocco responded less than 10 minutes later with an impressive equaliser from Amir Bouhamdi. The PSV Eindhoven youngster collected the ball on the left side of the penalty area before sending a powerful, deflected shot under the crossbar, leaving Oumar Kalifa Pona with no chance.
The second half produced no further goals, although both goalkeepers were called upon. Benchaouch made an important save shortly after the interval, while Pona denied Maamma before keeping out late efforts from Abdelhamid Maali and Lekhedim.
Morocco enjoyed 65% possession but were unable to turn that territorial advantage into a clear superiority in front of goal. Mali had more attempts overall, leading 9-8, while Morocco registered more shots on target, 4-6.
Morocco will look to return to winning ways on Monday when they face Tanzania in another friendly in Tangier. Mali will meet Burkina Faso in a friendly derby.
The Moroccan side will begin their U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in November, entering in the second round against either Ethiopia or Uganda. Mali’s opponents in that round will be either Zimbabwe or Mauritius.
