Morocco begin 2026 Women’s U-17 World Cup with emphatic win over New Zealand

Morocco made a commanding start to their 2026 Women’s U-17 World Cup campaign by beating New Zealand 4-0 in the tournament’s opening match.

The host nation underlined their ambitions on Saturday at the Complexe Mohammed VI de football in Sale, producing a dominant second-half display to overcome the New Zealanders.

Youness Rabie’s side had to wait until the 57th minute to break the deadlock. Sonia Abajiou of Frankfurt finished from Hiba Youssoufi’s assist to give Morocco the lead.

Morocco doubled their advantage 13 minutes later when New Zealand defender Eden Chaytor inadvertently turned Nessma Mouradi’s shot into her own net in the 70th minute. Mouradi plays for Paris FC.

The hosts continued to press forward and added a third six minutes later. Imane Dhissi, who plays for Borussia Monchengladbach, converted after being set up by Aya Ait Khouya Mouh of PSG.

Youssoufi completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, adding the fourth goal for Morocco and rounding off an impressive opening performance.

The result puts Morocco at the top of Group A on goal difference. They lead Germany, who defeated Argentina 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Morocco will face Germany in their second group-stage match next Tuesday. A second successive victory would secure their place in the last 16.

The Atlas Lionesses’ route to the knockout stage could also be confirmed through the tournament’s qualification system. The top two teams in every group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will progress to the elimination phase.

Morocco’s victory provides a strong response to Germany’s earlier win and gives the hosts an early advantage in Group A.
