Newly promoted Monza have completed the signing of Roma centre-back Jan Ziolkowski on a season-long loan deal that includes an option to buy for a reported €18m.
Roma confirmed that the transfer gives Monza the choice to make the move permanent, rather than requiring them to do so. The agreement will run until 20 June 2027, according to the official announcement, with the option available to the Biancorossi at the end of the loan period.
“The Polish defender arrives on a temporary basis from Roma until June 20, 2027, with an option to buy in favour of the Biancorossi,” read a statement on the club website on Monday morning.
Ziolkowski, 21, joined Roma from his hometown club Legia Warsaw last summer in a deal reportedly worth €6m. During his first season in Italy, the Poland international made 18 appearances in Serie A and featured four more times in the Europa League.
The central defender was largely used as a reserve behind Gianluca Mancini, Evan Ndicka and Mario Hermoso. That competition for places restricted Ziolkowski to five starts in the league during the 2025-26 campaign, despite his involvement across domestic and European competitions.
Hermoso has since left Roma, but Ziolkowski’s route into the first team could have become even more difficult this season. Roma have strengthened their defensive options by signing Konstantinos Koulierakis and Leonardo Balerdi, adding two more central defenders to their squad.
Monza’s agreement therefore gives the young defender an opportunity to secure more regular first-team football after a season in which he was mainly used as back-up at Roma. The club have not committed to a permanent transfer, with the reported €18m fee applying only if they decide to exercise the purchase option.
The move is Monza’s latest step after securing promotion, while Ziolkowski will now continue his development away from Roma on a temporary basis. His spell at the club will last through June 2027 unless Monza choose to activate the option to buy earlier under the terms of the agreement.
Ziolkowski has won three caps for Poland and arrived at Roma regarded as a developing defensive prospect after coming through at Legia Warsaw. His first campaign included appearances across Serie A and the Europa League, but a lack of consistent starts meant he remained behind more established options in Roma’s defensive hierarchy.
Monza’s decision to take him on loan provides the Poland international with the prospect of a larger role, while Roma retain control over his future unless the Biancorossi decide to complete the reported €18m purchase.
