AS Monaco have rejected a €45m offer from Chelsea for central midfielder Lamine Camara, leaving the 22-year-old’s immediate future uncertain with the English transfer window due to close.
The proposal was turned down by Monaco, according to well-known journalist Matt Law. It is not yet known whether Chelsea will return with an improved offer in the hours before the deadline.
Camara could therefore remain with Monaco, despite the interest from Chelsea and the size of the bid already made for the Senegal international.
The summer transfer window in England closes overnight between 1 and 2 September, meaning Chelsea have limited time if they decide to make another attempt to sign the midfielder.
Camara has made four appearances for Monaco in all competitions so far this season and has scored once. His current involvement in the team has made him a player of interest to Chelsea as they consider whether to strengthen their midfield before the deadline.
Monaco’s decision means the French club currently retain control of the situation. Unless Chelsea improve their proposal and persuade Monaco to change their position, Camara is set to stay at the club.
The reported €45m offer represents a significant attempt to complete the transfer, but Monaco have chosen not to accept it. The club’s refusal also leaves uncertainty over whether negotiations will continue, with no indication yet of Chelsea’s next move.
Chelsea must now decide whether to increase their bid or end their pursuit of the 22-year-old. With the English window closing soon, any further discussions would have to progress quickly.
For Camara, the outcome could determine whether he begins the season as a Monaco player or moves to Chelsea before the deadline. At present, however, Monaco’s rejection means the midfielder may remain at the club where he has already featured four times this campaign.
