Mohamed Salah fires Trabzonspor to victory and tops Super Lig scoring chart

Trabzonspor moved up to fourth in the Super Lig after a controlled 2-0 victory over Besiktas on Monday, with Mohamed Salah scoring his eighth league goal of the season to become the division’s outright leading scorer.

Ozan Tufan opened the scoring in the 21st minute, giving Trabzonspor a deserved advantage after a composed start to the match.

Besiktas were unable to respond after the break and were punished again 19 minutes from time. Franculino Dju began a rapid attack before Salah completed the move with a left-footed finish in the 71st minute.

The result extended Trabzonspor’s winning run to four matches in all competitions. Thomas Reis’ side now have 16 points and occupy fourth place, while Besiktas dropped to fifth with 15 points.

Salah’s latest goal also moved him clear at the top of the Super Lig scoring standings. The 34-year-old Egypt international is now ahead of Gift Orban, Vedat Muriqi and Eldor Shomurodov, who form the chasing group.

The former Liverpool forward has contributed more than goals this season. He has also provided three assists, one fewer than the league leader in that category, Alexandros Kyziridis.

That gives Salah 11 direct goal contributions in total, the highest figure recorded by any player in the Super Lig so far.

Trabzonspor will next turn their attention to Europe when they face Heart of Midlothian in the second matchday of the league phase of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
