Manqoba Mngqithi is available again after being dismissed by Young Africans, reopening speculation that the experienced coach could eventually take charge of Kaizer Chiefs.
The 55-year-old has been linked with the Amakhosi job for several years, including during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns. His departure from Young Africans on Saturday means he is back on the market, but there is no indication yet that Chiefs have made an approach.
Mngqithi, who has also worked with Golden Arrows, could become a contender if Fernando Da Cruz’s position at Naturena comes under further pressure.
Da Cruz remains Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, although his long-term future is expected to be influenced by the team’s results. On Friday, Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup at the preliminary stage.
Despite that setback, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr said the club continued to support Da Cruz and his technical staff.
“As a Club, we would like to reaffirm our full support for, and confidence in, the Head Coach and the entire technical team,” the statement said.
“They continue to have our trust as they lead the implementation of a football philosophy and development pathway that we firmly believe will bring sustainable success.”
Chiefs also praised the staff’s approach and commitment to improving the side.
“Their professionalism, work ethic, and commitment to improving the team every day remain irreproachable,” the club said.
“The team is fighting hard every game to uphold a high standard of performance, and yesterday, despite the result and the injuries we carry, that warrior spirit was visible on the field.”
The club’s public backing gives Da Cruz continued security for now, but the next two matches could prove important.
Chiefs face TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup before meeting Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby. Should Da Cruz fail to defeat TS Galaxy and then lose to Orlando Pirates, the club could reconsider his position.
Such a change would potentially create an opening for Mngqithi, whose name has repeatedly been associated with the Chiefs job. For the moment, however, Da Cruz remains in charge and has the club’s stated confidence.
