Milan maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026-27 Serie A season with a 3-2 victory over Atalanta on Sunday, but Italian newspapers have identified a growing concern surrounding Ruben Amorim’s team.
The Rossoneri appeared to be in complete control at San Siro after taking a 3-0 lead within an hour. Record signing Goncalo Ramos opened the scoring before Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila added further goals.
Ramos was then given the chance to extend Milan’s advantage from the penalty spot. However, he was unable to convert when presented with another opportunity from 12 yards.
That miss proved significant as Atalanta fought their way back into the match. Gianluca Gaetano pulled one goal back in the 66th minute, while Nikola Krstovic reduced the deficit to one in the 81st minute.
Milan were forced to withstand sustained pressure during the closing stages, with goalkeeper Mike Maignan making several important saves to preserve the result and secure all three points.
Despite the late concern, La Gazzetta dello Sport believes Milan are “on the right track” under Amorim. The newspaper has nevertheless pointed to what it describes as a “growing issue” with the team’s performances.
According to the Pink Paper, Amorim’s tactical system places considerable physical demands on his players. That intensity may be behind Milan’s apparent difficulty in maintaining the same performance level throughout a full 90 minutes.
The concern emerged despite considerable praise for the team’s display against Atalanta. La Gazzetta dello Sport also credited Amorim for managing his squad effectively after the demanding schedule.
The Milan head coach made seven changes to his starting XI following Thursday night’s 4-0 Europa League victory over RB Salzburg. Even with those alterations, his side scored three goals against Atalanta in the league.
The newspaper also highlighted Milan’s continued ability to create attacking opportunities, while suggesting the team is beginning to develop a clearer “identity” under their recently appointed manager.
Milan’s victory therefore extended their unbeaten league start, but the match also reinforced the question of whether Amorim’s side can sustain its intensity across an entire game.
