Milan have begun planning for the possible departure of Luka Modric, with Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari emerging as their preferred option to replace the Croatia international.
Modric is approaching his 42nd year and his future at Milan remains uncertain, despite continuing to produce impressive performances since joining the club. The midfielder has traditionally extended his contract on a year-by-year basis, leaving open the possibility that he could retire at the end of the season or move on from the Rossoneri.
Although Modric has started four matches this season, Milan’s management have already begun considering who could eventually take over his role in midfield.
According to Mundo Deportivo, citing Italian newspaper Tuttosport, 22-year-old Ayari is currently the leading candidate on the club’s shortlist. Born in Sweden to a Tunisian father and a Moroccan mother, Ayari has established himself as a regular starter for Brighton.
Milan face competition for his signature, however, with several clubs understood to be interested in the Sweden midfielder. That interest could make it difficult for the Italian club to complete a deal.
The report identifies Ayari as Milan’s preferred target as they prepare for the possibility of losing Modric, either through retirement or a departure when his current arrangement expires.
