Michael Kayode marked his first appearance for Italy with a goal as the Brentford right-back helped the Nazionale to a 4-1 victory over Turkey in Bursa.
The 22-year-old, who was born in Italy to parents from Ondo State in Nigeria, had been eligible to represent the Super Eagles. He chose instead to continue his international career with Italy, a decision that gained added significance after he made an immediate impact on his debut.
Kayode was influential throughout the match, providing energy on the right flank and producing a composed all-round display. He completed 39 of his 42 passes, had 69 touches and created one chance.
He was also effective in the final third, where he made three passes. His delivery was particularly reliable, with every cross and long ball finding its target.
The defender also contributed defensively, making four clearances and winning back possession twice as Italy secured a convincing result.
The victory offered Italy a response after their 2-0 defeat by Belgium in Rome last Friday. It was the Nazionale’s first match since their failure to qualify for the World Cup, and they showed signs of recovery in Turkey.
Italy were able to exploit the space left by their opponents and completed a comfortable win. For Kayode, however, the evening will be remembered above all for scoring on his international debut and announcing himself on the senior stage.
