Kylian Mbappe has highlighted his African heritage and the support he receives from the continent as he continues his pursuit of the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
The Real Madrid forward spoke about his links to Africa, his family background and his relationship with supporters across the continent during an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI).
Mbappe, who has Cameroonian and Algerian roots through his parents, said maintaining a connection with his origins remained an important part of his identity.
“I have never severed my ties with my roots and origins. I think this is important because it is part of my identity and the values I was raised with.”
The France captain also described the reception he receives whenever he visits Africa, saying the support from people across the continent has been particularly meaningful to him.
“Every time I visit Africa, I am warmly welcomed. I feel the love of the people, and it is truly a pleasure to feel the support of an entire continent.”
Mbappe is among the players being linked with the Ballon d’Or after his performances for France at the World Cup this summer.
He scored 10 goals at the tournament to finish as its leading scorer and also moved to the top of the competition’s all-time scoring list with 22 goals.
With African voters forming part of the Ballon d’Or voting process, Mbappe said he was pleased to see his name connected with the prestigious individual award and acknowledged the backing he receives from African supporters.
“As someone of African descent, I am always happy to see people linking my name to this award; it is gratifying. I thank them for everything, and I hope to leave with the Ballon d’Or to give it to them in one way or another.”
Mbappe also addressed the decisions of players with dual nationalities who choose to represent African countries rather than France.
Among those mentioned were Ayoub Bouadi, who opted for Morocco, and Ibrahim Mbaye, who chose Senegal.
The France captain said such decisions should be viewed according to each player’s personal background and connection to their country.
“Everyone acts according to their history, background and connection to their country. When the choice comes from the heart, it is difficult to object to it or comment on it.”
The Real Madrid striker also reflected on his experience facing African national teams and praised the progress they have made in recent years.
Mbappe recalled attending several matches during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and said the standard of African international football had continued to rise.
“The level today is very high. You can see that African teams are competing strongly with other national teams, and we saw that in the World Cup. This is the kind of football I enjoy watching.”
He also explained why matches against African opposition can present a particular challenge for France.
“Playing against African teams is extremely difficult. They are teams whose defenses are hard to penetrate, and they have gained a lot of confidence. They have realized that they can beat any team, they play without fear or hesitation, and they have become very dangerous. For us, facing them is always a challenge.”
Mbappe’s comments combine his Ballon d’Or ambitions with a public reaffirmation of his connection to his African heritage, while also highlighting the support he says he receives from fans across the continent.
