Morocco has stepped up the redevelopment of the Grand Stadium of Marrakech after awarding a $134 million contract for major electrical, digital and security upgrades.
The contract, worth 1.265 billion Moroccan dirhams, has been awarded to Lamalif Group as part of the fourth phase of the stadium’s renovation programme.
The project forms part of Morocco’s broader efforts to bring its sporting infrastructure in line with international standards ahead of major competitions, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Lamalif Group will oversee the installation of high- and low-voltage electrical systems, with the works scheduled to be completed within 18 months.
The redevelopment will extend beyond the stadium’s power supply, with significant investment going into its digital and technological infrastructure.
The project includes specialised lighting systems, generators, power-conversion equipment and other electrical installations aimed at improving the venue’s operational capacity.
New digital systems will also be introduced, including pre-wiring for data and telephone networks, IT and wireless networks, alongside telecommunications equipment.
Security infrastructure forms another major part of the project. The stadium will receive upgraded access-control systems and a comprehensive video-surveillance network designed to improve monitoring at entrances and throughout the venue.
The audiovisual facilities will also be modernised with new LED screens and ribbons, sound systems, broadcasting and projection networks, allowing the stadium to better meet the requirements of international football and television production.
The conference hall will receive updated technical facilities as part of the same programme, strengthening the venue’s capacity to host media activities, meetings and events connected to major competitions.
A Central Technical Management (GTC) system will also be installed to provide centralised monitoring and control of the stadium’s technical infrastructure.
The latest contract is part of the wider redevelopment programme overseen by SONARGES, Morocco’s National Company for the Construction and Management of Sports Facilities.
The Grand Stadium of Marrakech, which opened in 2011, is undergoing a broader transformation that includes upgrades to the stands, a full roof covering and an increase in seating capacity.
The Marrakech venue is among six Moroccan stadiums shortlisted to host matches at the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
The latest investment further underlines Morocco’s push to modernise its stadium network and ensure its venues are equipped to handle the technical, security and operational demands of major international football tournaments.
