Mbappe faces questions after narrow Ballon d’Or defeat to Kane

Kylian Mbappe’s loss to Harry Kane in the 2026 Ballon d’Or has revived comparisons with Vinicius Junior’s defeat by Rodri two years earlier, raising questions about whether falling short in football’s most prestigious individual award can have a lasting psychological impact.

Mbappe finished second behind Kane, with Lamine Yamal third, after a contest which Vincent Garcia, editor-in-chief of France Football, described as closer than the 2024 race between Rodri and Vinicius.

Garcia said Mbappe had led the voting for a significant period before Kane moved ahead during the final stages. The margin was therefore narrower than the 41-point gap by which Rodri beat Vinicius Junior in 2024.

That result caused widespread debate because of Vinicius’ outstanding season with Real Madrid, during which he played a key role in the club winning La Liga and the Champions League.

The controversy increased when Vinicius and Real Madrid’s delegation stayed away from the ceremony after the club received indications that the Brazilian would not win. His defeat consequently became more than the conclusion of an individual award vote, developing into a public dispute between the club and the Ballon d’Or.

Two years later, the circumstances surrounding Mbappe were different. The France striker attended the 2026 ceremony despite losing to Kane, while Vinicius had decided not to appear in 2024.

The reactions of Mbappe and Yamal when the result was announced also showed surprise and disappointment in front of the cameras. However, attendance at the event does not necessarily indicate that Mbappe accepted the outcome more easily, just as Vinicius’ absence alone cannot establish his state of mind.

There may have been different reasons behind the decisions to attend or boycott the ceremonies, while a player’s expression during a live broadcast cannot fully reveal what he is experiencing privately.

Since losing to Rodri, Vinicius’ performances have remained the subject of regular discussion. Criticism of his displays and influence at Real Madrid has increased, with comparisons made with the level he produced in the seasons before the award.

That has led to repeated questions in the media over the past two years about whether the defeat affected Vinicius psychologically and contributed to any decline in his form.

It is difficult to establish a definitive link. Any sporting downturn cannot automatically be attributed to one event, particularly in football, where technical, physical and tactical factors combine with circumstances affecting both the player and team. A sequence in time does not, by itself, prove that one event caused another.

Mbappe may be better equipped to recover, given his competitive character and long experience of dealing with pressure and high expectations at club and international level. But that remains an assessment rather than an established fact.

Mental strength should be judged by what a player produces after disappointment, how he responds to pressure and whether he maintains or improves his formnot simply by a ceremony reaction.

Mbappe will have further opportunities to challenge for the award. His response in the months ahead, rather than his expression on the night, will determine whether the 2026 defeat becomes a burden or an incentive.
