Tottenham Hotspur have been given a 29.39% chance of relegation by an Opta supercomputer after a poor start to the Premier League season, with new signing Omar Marmoush among the players facing criticism following the club’s failure to win any of their opening five matches.
Tottenham have taken just two points from those five games, drawing twice without scoring, leaving them at the bottom of the Premier League table and raising fresh concerns about their prospects for the season.
According to Opta Sports Statistics, Tottenham are among the three teams most likely to be relegated to the Championship. Coventry have been given a 43.82% relegation probability, while Fulham are rated at 42.40%.
The prediction represents another setback for Tottenham after the club came close to dropping out of the Premier League last season. They survived on the final day of the campaign, while London rivals West Ham United were relegated instead.
Tottenham’s difficult start has also placed attention on the club’s summer rebuilding programme. The London side invested about £400m in new players during the transfer window as the management attempted to strengthen the squad and prevent a repeat of last season’s problems.
Marmoush was among the major arrivals, alongside Savio, Sandro Tonali and Matias Fernandez. The club had also appointed Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi at the end of the previous season as part of its efforts to change the team’s fortunes.
However, the spending has yet to produce the results Tottenham were seeking.
The team have scored only two goals in their opening five league matches and have conceded eight. Their inability to produce victories or establish a clear playing style has increased the pressure surrounding the squad.
Marmoush has been affected by the difficult beginning to the campaign, with Tottenham’s players facing criticism from supporters and former club figures over their performances.
The Egyptian international arrived at a club that had invested heavily in its squad, but Tottenham’s results have so far failed to reflect that spending.
The latest Opta prediction adds to the uncertainty surrounding the London club. While the supercomputer does not make relegation certain, its calculations place Tottenham among the sides facing the greatest statistical risk of dropping into the Championship.
At the opposite end of the table, Opta’s calculations have identified Arsenal as the leading candidate to win the Premier League title.
Arsenal are predicted to retain the championship for a second successive season, having ended a 22-year wait for the title last season. The Gunners have been given a 43.6% probability of winning the league.
Manchester City are next on 39.7%, while Liverpool have been given a 5.81% chance of finishing the season as champions.
The contrasting predictions underline the different expectations at both ends of the table. Arsenal have been placed at the top of the title calculations, while Tottenham face a statistical battle to avoid relegation.
For Marmoush and his new team-mates, the immediate task is to turn around a start that has produced no wins, only two points and two goals from their first five league matches.
With the club’s significant summer investment yet to translate into results, Tottenham’s position at the bottom of the table has already created pressure early in the campaign.
