Maresca plays down Haaland injury fears after Manchester City’s seventh straight win

Enzo Maresca says Erling Haaland’s injury in Manchester City’s 3-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town is not believed to be serious.

Haaland was hurt late in Saturday’s match after a challenge involving Jack Clarke. The Manchester City forward appeared to be in discomfort and limped from the pitch at full-time, prompting concern over the condition of a player who has been central to his side’s impressive start to the season.

However, Maresca said Haaland had reassured him after the match.

“We will see. Erling said he was OK. I don’t have any news at the moment,” said Maresca.

Haaland had earlier scored twice against Ipswich Town, helping Manchester City maintain a perfect record after seven Premier League matches. The Norway international has now scored 12 goals in 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

His second goal also took him to 100 non-penalty goals in the Premier League. Haaland reached that total in 139 appearances, doing so more quickly than any other player. The previous record was held by Alan Shearer, who needed 150 appearances to reach the milestone in 1996.

Haaland has also found the net in six consecutive top-flight games. His 853 minutes played in 2026-27 are the second-highest total among Manchester City outfield players, behind only Ruben Dias, who has played 855 minutes. Haaland is 26 years old.

Maresca has made history with his own start as a manager, becoming the first manager to win each of his first seven Premier League games in charge of a team.

Manchester City are only the third side to win their opening seven matches of a Premier League season. Liverpool won their first eight games in 2019-20, while Chelsea opened the 2005-06 campaign with nine successive victories.

Injuries overshadowed parts of the win over Ipswich Town, with Nico O’Reilly, Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Antoine Semenyo also suffering problems.

“Unfortunately, in 10 minutes we had four or five players [injured] – Matheus, Kova, Erling, Antoine and Nico also – but they are inside now, and we will see,” added Maresca.

“I asked all of them. Mateo and Kova said they were OK. Erling also said he was OK and Nico, it’s still his back.

“It’s still the same problem. The only one we need to wait for is Antoine.”
