Mancini’s reaction underlines Italy’s ambition after France draw

Italy supporters have welcomed Roberto Mancini’s visibly frustrated response to Friday’s 1-1 draw against France, interpreting it as evidence that the Azzurri believed they could win rather than being content with a point away to one of the world’s strongest teams.

Italy recovered from behind in the Nations League contest at the Stade de France, with second-half goals from Michael Olise and Alessandro Bastoni producing the final score.

Mancini’s reaction at the final whistle attracted particular attention. Italy had possession in France’s half when the match ended, and the head coach appeared disappointed that his side had not been able to pursue a winning goal in the closing stages.

That response has been viewed positively by Italy supporters, who felt it showed the team had the momentum and confidence to challenge France rather than simply protect the draw.

The result gives Mancini four points from his first three matches of his second spell in charge of Italy. His return began with a 2-0 home defeat by Belgium, followed by a 4-1 away victory against Turkey before Friday’s draw in France.

Although Italy’s performances in 2026 had been disappointing before the September-October international break, earning a point against France was regarded by most as a positive result. France reached the World Cup semi-finals and won the competition in 2018, making the away draw a significant outcome for Mancini’s side.

However, the coach’s reaction suggested that he believed Italy had more to offer. With the Azzurri in possession, playing in France’s half and carrying momentum late in the match, Mancini appeared frustrated that his team had not turned those circumstances into a winning opportunity.

The response also reflected the belief that Italy were capable of competing with France on equal terms, rather than approaching the match solely with the aim of avoiding defeat.
