Manchester United prospect JJ Gabriel still wants to leave the club and is training in Catalonia during the international break while his future remains unresolved, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The 15-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising young players in world football, but his immediate career plans have yet to be settled. He is currently in Spain as he considers his next move.
Gabriel formally asked Manchester United last month to end his contract with immediate effect. The club rejected that request and remains determined to keep him.
While uncertainty continues over his situation, Gabriel has been working with personal coach Jack Hunter at a training field in Castelldefels, near Barcelona, to keep fit. Gabriel and his family regularly visit Barcelona and are interested in the possibility of him joining Barcelona.
Real Madrid, under Jose Mourinho, have also been linked with a move for the teenager. However, Barcelona sporting director Deco played down reports of the club’s involvement when speaking at a Portuguese football summit.
“There’s nothing to say about this kid,” Deco said. “It’s normal for players to be linked with us; these things always happen. There’s a huge market behind it, involving many interests, even for young players.
“But we are not interested in any player in his situation. I’m not sure what’s happening now, or if he’s still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in this.
“Before trying to do anything, we first need to understand the specific situation. Talking about young players and teenage players is not something we should be doing.”
Gabriel will turn 16 next week. Under current regulations, he cannot sign a professional contract until he reaches the age of 17.
The attention surrounding his future has prompted Manchester United manager Michael Carrick to urge people to remain measured when discussing the player.
“I’m just reiterating what I’ve said before: he’s still a kid, and it’s important not to disclose any details here,” Carrick said.
“We must be careful with the attention and scrutiny he receives, remain rational, and consider his well-being. Things will resolve themselves naturally.”
