Manchester United handed boost in pursuit of Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri

Manchester United have been encouraged in their efforts to sign Rayan Ait-Nouri, with the Manchester City left-back facing an uncertain future after struggling for regular playing time this season under Italian manager Enzo Maresca.

The 25-year-old was considered a possible United target during the summer transfer window as the club looked to strengthen at left-back.

United also held an interest in Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. However, manager Michael Carrick was not given a new signing in the position and has had to rely on Luke Shaw as his only first-team option there.

The club were interested in bringing in the Algeria international, but Manchester City rejected a proposal to take him on loan on the final day of the transfer window. United could revisit the possibility of signing him in January, with the chances of his departure now increasing, according to the British newspaper The Sun.

Ait-Nouri seeking regular football

Ait-Nouri has made only four appearances this season and has yet to play in the Premier League. His lack of opportunities comes despite his desire for more minutes, particularly after he featured in just 17 Premier League matches under Pep Guardiola last season.

Manchester City were reluctant to allow the defender to move to their city rivals, while Juventus are also understood to be interested in the player.

According to the report, Ait-Nouri could leave City during the next winter transfer window after his representatives asked the club to find a solution to his current situation.

“We have to find the best solution with Manchester City. He cannot remain in a situation where his talent is being wasted,” the player’s representatives said.

Ait-Nouri has played twice in the Carabao Cup and the UEFA Champions League this season. He has registered three assists despite spending only 168 minutes on the pitch.
