Manchester United equal worst start since 1986 after one Premier League win

Manchester United have matched their worst start to a season since 1986 after recording just one Premier League victory so far.

That success came in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town on 30 August, leaving the club level with an unwanted record that has stood for almost four decades.

In 1986, Manchester United also had only one win at this stage of the campaign. Manager Ron Atkinson was dismissed in November, with that sole victory still the only one on the club’s record.

He was replaced by Alex Ferguson, who had previously guided Aberdeen to outstanding success and ended the dominance of Celtic and Rangers in Scotland.

The appointment marked the beginning of a transformative period for Manchester United, with Ferguson later being given the title “Sir”. The rest, as the source article notes, became history.

Manchester United’s next match is against Bournemouth.
