Manchester United are considering an approach for Youssouf Fofana during the January transfer window after the midfielder made an early impression at Sevilla FC.
The 27-year-old Franco-Malian joined the Spanish club on loan and has quickly established himself in midfield. His first performances in La Liga have attracted interest from several major European clubs, with Manchester United now understood to be unwilling to wait until the summer before exploring a potential deal.
United targeting midfield reinforcement
According to VamosMiSevilla, Manchester United are considering making a move in the next winter transfer window in an attempt to sign Fofana.
The Premier League club are believed to have been impressed by the midfielder’s influence and by his ability to add strength and balance to the centre of the pitch. United would reportedly be prepared to make a substantial offer to AC Milan, who hold the player’s registration after paying 26m euros to sign him.
Any bid in January would reflect Manchester United’s desire to strengthen their midfield as quickly as possible. However, a deal would involve more than simply agreeing terms with AC Milan.
Fofana is on loan at Sevilla FC until 30 June 2027, with no purchase option included in the agreement. He remains under contract with AC Milan until 2028.
That means a move to Manchester in January could not happen without the approval of every party involved. AC Milan would have to end Fofana’s loan spell in Spain early before being able to take direct control of the player’s future.
Loan agreement creates obstacle
Ending the arrangement before its scheduled conclusion could require AC Milan to pay significant compensation to Sevilla FC. The Spanish club had expected to retain Fofana until the end of the 2026/27 season, and Manchester United’s interest has placed that plan under pressure.
The financial commitment required to resolve the loan agreement remains unclear, as does the scale of the offer Manchester United would be willing to make to AC Milan. The English club must also convince both Milan and Sevilla FC that an early change is acceptable.
Fofana’s rapid adaptation in Spain has therefore created a complicated situation for all three clubs. Manchester United want to move quickly, but any January transfer would depend on negotiations over the player’s registration, his existing loan and the compensation due to Sevilla FC.
Sevilla FC will soon play Levante in the eighth round of the Spanish league. Fofana’s involvement in that fixture comes as his future becomes the subject of growing attention, with Manchester United considering whether to launch an offensive at the start of the winter market.
