Manchester United beaten 4-2 by AC Milan as Ruben Amorim’s former club stages comeback

Manchester United surrendered an early lead to lose 4-2 to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in their final pre-season friendly in Poland, with the defeat raising concerns about their readiness for the Premier League season.

Harry Maguire put United ahead after only two minutes, rising to head Bruno Fernandes’ corner beyond the Milan defence. Amad Diallo nearly doubled the advantage soon afterwards when he dispossessed Strahinja Pavlovic and came close to finishing.

The opening exchanges suggested Amorim could be in for a difficult afternoon against his former club. However, Milan gradually found a way back into the contest.

Senne Lammens produced an important save to deny Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the 15th minute, but United were unable to prevent the Rossoneri from equalising before half-time. Goncalo Ramos created the opening for Samuel Chukwueze, who finished from close range in the 37th minute.

United had a chance to restore their lead before the interval when they were awarded a penalty. Fernandes struck the spot-kick firmly, but his effort was well saved, leaving the sides level at the break.

United regained the advantage six minutes into the second half after a poor back-pass from Filippo Terracciano presented Patrick Dorgu with the opportunity to score.

That lead lasted only six minutes. Chukwueze caused problems down Milan’s right and delivered the ball towards the far post, where Alphadjo Cisse arrived unnoticed to bring his side level again.

The same flank then proved decisive as Milan turned the match in their favour. Chukwueze supplied another cross for Ramos, who headed the visitors in front for the first time in the 68th minute.

Three minutes later, Loftus-Cheek completed the comeback after racing forward down the right before finding the net.

The manner in which United’s performance unravelled will be particularly concerning with the new Premier League season due to begin next weekend. Their defensive organisation deteriorated as Milan increased the pressure, while the right side was repeatedly exposed.

The introduction of United’s substitutes did little to change the momentum. Lisandro Martinez was eased back into action after his World Cup exertions, while Kobbie Mainoo also made his return.

Marcus Rashford came on in the 61st minute for his first appearance for Manchester United in 20 months, but he could not prevent Milan from taking control of the match.

United had started brightly, with Maguire’s early header giving them the perfect beginning, yet Milan’s response exposed weaknesses that Amorim will need to address before competitive football resumes.
