Mamour Ndiaye makes his mark as Senegalese goalkeeper impresses in France

Senegalese goalkeeper Mamour Ndiaye has made a strong impression at AS Saint-Étienne after delivering a composed performance in his first start for the French club, helping them secure a 1-0 victory over Red Star.

The young shot-stopper was handed the opportunity following an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur and responded with a display that earned praise from head coach Ian Cathro.

Ndiaye started in Saturday’s match at the Stade Bauer, where Saint-Étienne claimed an important victory in a meeting between teams near the top of the table.

Despite facing limited opportunities to make saves, the Senegalese goalkeeper demonstrated confidence, authority and control throughout the contest.

His performance also caught the attention of his captain, Julien Le Cardinal, as Ndiaye began to establish himself within the squad during a crucial period of the season.

For the  goalkeeper, the match represented a significant step after previously making only a brief appearance in Saint-Étienne’s 2-0 victory over Rodez.

Being selected from the start against Red Star provided a much bigger test, with the responsibility of helping the team maintain its defensive stability.

Ndiaye handled the occasion with composure, showing assurance when dealing with crosses and taking charge of situations inside his penalty area.

His distribution and command of the air also helped him demonstrate that he could cope with the demands of first-team football.

Although Red Star did not subject him to a heavy barrage of shots, the Senegalese youngster avoided mistakes and maintained his concentration throughout the match.

His calm approach was particularly important in a contest where Saint-Étienne needed to protect their advantage.

Cathro was pleased with the goalkeeper’s contribution, highlighting the preparation and attitude that helped him manage the occasion.

“I think a lot has happened for him since last week. He understood that it was going to be his first start, he prepared for it. He stayed calm, natural, he continued to work. It’s a good step for him. I think he helped the team stay calm and balanced tonight.”

The Scottish coach’s assessment underlined the importance of Ndiaye’s performance beyond individual goalkeeping statistics. His ability to remain composed and help organise the team offered Saint-Étienne reassurance during a match with significant implications for their campaign.

The opportunity arose because Larsonneur is expected to be absent for several weeks through injury, creating an opening for Ndiaye to gain valuable experience at senior level.

For the young Senegalese goalkeeper, the circumstances provide an opportunity to build on his first start and demonstrate that he can compete for a more regular role in the team.
