Mamelodi Sundowns will retire the number eight jersey for the 2026/27 season in memory of Jayden Adams, the midfielder who died at the age of 25 on 11 July 2026.
The tribute recognises Adams’ influence on the club and its supporters, known collectively as the Yellow Nation, after a career that included domestic and continental success as well as a landmark FIFA World Cup campaign with Bafana Bafana.
“In honour of Jayden Adams, the number eight jersey will be retired for the 2026/27 season. A fitting tribute to a player whose impact on the Yellow Nation will never be forgotten,” Sundowns announced.
Adams was found inside a residential property in Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, shortly after returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The South African Police Service (SAPS) opened an inquest after his death, while police said that no foul play was suspected.
His passing came only weeks after he had helped Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. During the tournament, Adams demonstrated considerable personal strength by playing against Czechia despite being told just hours before the match that his maternal grandmother had died.
That appearance formed part of a historic campaign for South Africa, with Adams contributing to the team’s progress beyond the group stage and into the knockout phase.
Adams began his professional rise with Stellenbosch FC before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns. He subsequently became part of a highly successful Sundowns side that won the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League.
His reputation was built not only on technical ability, but also on his reading of the game and a reputation for humility. Those qualities helped establish him as an important member of the Sundowns squad.
Tributes followed from throughout the football community after his death. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie were among the prominent figures to honour Adams and reflect on his contribution to the sport.
A public memorial service was held at Stellenbosch Town Hall, followed by his funeral on 25 July 2026.
Sundowns’ decision means the number eight shirt will remain unassigned throughout the 2026/27 campaign. The club says the gesture will keep Adams’ memory present whenever the team takes to the pitch, ensuring that one of the Yellow Nation’s own continues to be remembered.
