Malian international Salim Diakité has joined Belgian side Zulte Waregem on a season-long loan from Palermo, with the club holding an option to make the move permanent.
The 26-year-old defender becomes Zulte Waregem’s latest signing and will have the opportunity to play in Belgium’s top division for the first time in his career.
Diakité arrives after spending most of his senior career in Italy, where he moved in 2019 following his early development in France.

His switch to Zulte Waregem represents a new chapter for a player who has spent the past several years competing in the Italian leagues.
The right-footed wing-back began his career with French club FC Mantois, making his senior debut at the age of 18. In 2019, he moved to Italy, beginning a long spell in the country’s football system with Agnonese.
He subsequently played for Teramo and Ternana before securing a move to Palermo in January 2024.
Diakité went on to make 66 appearances for Palermo’s first team. Last season, he spent time on loan at Juve Stabia, where he made 14 appearances.
His move to Zulte Waregem means he will now leave Italian football temporarily and experience a different league and footballing environment.
The Malian international has been operating largely in Serie B since arriving in Italy, making his move to Belgium particularly significant. He is now set to compete in a top-flight division for the first time in his career.
For Zulte Waregem, the deal provides an experienced defender capable of operating on the flank, while the option to buy gives the club the possibility of securing his services permanently if his performances prove convincing.
Diakité, who has eight international caps for Mali, says he was quickly persuaded by what he saw and heard from the Belgian club during negotiations.
“I am very excited to take this new step in my career,” says Diakité. “I had a very good feeling about the team right from the first conversations and was quickly convinced to come down to Waregem.
“Now that I have had the chance to meet everyone here and view the infrastructure, I can’t wait to defend the colors of Essevee.”
The defender’s arrival is therefore about more than simply changing clubs.
It gives him the chance to establish himself in a new country and compete regularly at a higher level than he has experienced in Italy.
