Malian midfielder Sekou Koné has earned a first-team contract with Red Bull New York after impressing for the club’s second team, marking a significant step forward in the 19-year-old’s professional career.
The Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced on 9 October that Koné had signed a one-and-a-half-year deal running through the 2027-28 season, with options extending his contract into the 2028-29 and 2029-30 campaigns.
The move rewards the young midfielder’s performances for Red Bull New York II and his early opportunities with the senior side.
Koné has made two appearances for the first team this season, having made his MLS debut against Los Angeles FC on 9 September.
He recorded 72 completed passes from open play in that match, the third-highest total among New York players.
He subsequently made his first MLS start against St Louis CITY SC on 30 September.
The midfielder has also featured regularly for the reserve team, making 18 appearances for Red Bull New York II this season. He recorded his first career assist in MLS NEXT Pro against CT United on 19 July.
The club’s head of sport, Julian de Guzman, said Koné had earned his promotion through his performances and highlighted his qualities in possession and ability to cover ground.
“We’re excited to welcome Sekou to the first team. He’s a talented young midfielder who shows great composure on the ball and has the ability to cover a lot of ground,” said Head of Sports Julian de Guzman.
“Sekou has performed at a high level for RBNY II this season and has earned this opportunity. We look forward to seeing him continue his development and contribute at the next level.”
For Koné, who developed his football at the Yeleen Olympique Academy in Bamako, the contract represents an important milestone in his journey from Mali to the United States’ top professional league.
His progress has also been welcomed by his family, with his older brother, Abdoulaye Koné, expressing confidence in the teenager’s ability to succeed at the next level.
Speaking to Africafoot, Abdoulaye said the agreement reflected his younger brother’s dedication and determination to improve.
“I was completely confident about this signing. He’s a hard worker, and you could say this is the result of his efforts. We want him to continue going as far as he can. He’s incredibly motivated and very determined to move forward. We wish him every success in this new chapter of his career.”
Abdoulaye added that the family had anticipated the possibility of a permanent first-team opportunity after seeing the midfielder’s early performances with the senior squad.
“We spoke on the phone before the signing. We were optimistic; we knew it was possible, given what he had shown at the beginning with the first team. It’s no longer a surprise to us. We are very happy for him.”
The contract gives Koné a longer-term opportunity to establish himself within the first-team set-up as he continues to adapt to the demands of senior football.
