Mali hold hosts Morocco in strong WAFCON warm-up

Mali women’s national football team produced an encouraging performance as they held Morocco women’s national football team to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The match, played at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, formed part of both teams’ preparations for the continental tournament, which will be hosted by Morocco.

For Mali, the result represents a significant step forward as they continue to build momentum against one of Africa’s strongest sides.

Facing a well-supported Moroccan team on home soil, the West Africans demonstrated discipline, organisation, and resilience throughout the contest.

Despite early pressure from the hosts, Mali remained composed and gradually grew into the game.

Their defensive structure frustrated Morocco for long periods, limiting clear chances while offering glimpses of attacking intent on the counter.

The breakthrough eventually came through Aissata Traoré, who gave Mali the lead and momentarily silenced the home crowd.

Her goal was the reward for a disciplined approach and highlighted the team’s ability to capitalise on key moments.

However, Morocco responded quickly, underlining their quality and determination. The Atlas Lionesses found an equaliser soon after, restoring parity and setting up a competitive second half.

From that point, the match developed into a closely contested battle, with both sides seeking to assert control without leaving themselves exposed.

Mali continued to defend with composure, while Morocco pushed forward in search of a winning goal, backed by strong home support.

In the end, neither team was able to find a decisive breakthrough, and the match finished level at 1-1, a result that reflects both Mali’s resilience and Morocco’s attacking persistence.

From an African football perspective, the draw offers valuable insight into Mali’s growing competitiveness on the women’s stage.

Holding the host nation in their own backyard sends a strong message ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

For Mali’s technical team, the performance will serve as a useful benchmark as they assess their readiness for the tournament.

Matches against top opposition provide a clearer picture of the squad’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Morocco, meanwhile, will also take positives from the encounter as they continue preparations for a competition they are set to host.

Their ability to respond after falling behind highlights the depth and character within the squad.

With the Women’s AFCON fast approaching, both teams are entering a crucial phase of preparation.

For Mali, this result not only boosts confidence but also reinforces their ambition to compete strongly on the continental stage.
