Former Bafana Bafana striker Lehlohonolo Majoro has defended Orlando Pirates forward Yanela Mbuthuma, arguing that the striker’s contribution should not be judged solely by the number of goals he scores.
Mbuthuma has faced criticism for his limited return in front of goal, but Majoro said the Pirates player performs important work for the team in both attacking and defensive phases. He believes Mbuthuma’s willingness to press opponents and help the team win back possession is a significant part of his value.
Majoro was speaking on the 117th episode of the Arena Sports Show, presented by Clauiee Grace Mpanza and Mahlatse Mphahlele. He appeared alongside Hlompho Kekana to discuss Saturday’s eagerly anticipated Betway Premiership meeting between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium.
“We are used to a striker as a person who just scores goals,” said Majoro.
The former Bafana Bafana forward acknowledged that goals remain an important measure for any striker, especially when a player’s season is assessed statistically. However, he said coaches also evaluate performances through a wider lens, taking into account the work a player does away from the ball.
“As a striker, you have a role that you play within the team in defence and attack. I believe Mbuthuma is one of the strikers that is selfless and does hard labour in terms of helping the team to quickly regain the ball.
“There are players who do a lot of things in the game and it requires a person to watch with a different eye. I am not saying strikers are not judged on goals,” he said.
Majoro’s comments underline the difference between public expectations of forwards and the broader responsibilities they may be given within a team’s tactical system. While supporters often focus on goals and missed chances, a striker can also be asked to lead the press, compete for possession and contribute defensively.
“At the end of the season, they check the number of games you played against goals that you scored. This is still what determines a good striker, but a coach looks at the game differently.”
The discussion took place ahead of the meeting between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, one of the most highly anticipated fixtures in the Betway Premiership. Majoro and Kekana were invited to preview the contest during the Arena Sports Show, with Mbuthuma’s role at Orlando Pirates forming part of the wider conversation about how attacking players should be assessed.
