Algerian football legend Rabah Madjer has urged the national team to set ambitious targets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that the Fennecs can make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking to ALG24, the former striker said Algeria should not be content with simply participating in the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Instead, he called on the team to approach the competition with belief and determination.
“We are used to the World Cup. I wish them much success and a long run in this tournament,” said Madjer.
The former FC Porto forward, who represented Algeria at two World Cups during his playing career, also highlighted the responsibility that comes with competing at such a level. However, he remains optimistic about the team’s chances under head coach Vladimir Petkovic.
“All the teams present at the World Cup have great ambitions. God willing, Algeria will also have great ambitions. The responsibility is very great, but it will not be impossible.”
Madjer’s comments reflect growing optimism around Algeria’s return to the global stage, with expectations rising among supporters that the team can compete strongly against elite opposition.
The 64-year-old also looked back on one of the most iconic moments in Algeria’s football history ; their performance at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. On their tournament debut, Algeria stunned West Germany national football team with a famous 2-1 victory in Gijón, widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.
“It was a huge joy for Algerian supporters. Especially that victory against Germany. At the time, they were the best team in the tournament,” he recalled.
Madjer emphasised the scale of that achievement, noting that West Germany went on to reach the final, underlining the significance of Algeria’s triumph on the world stage.
He also spoke emotionally about scoring Algeria’s first-ever World Cup goal during that tournament, a milestone that remains a proud moment in the nation’s football history.
As Algeria prepares for another World Cup campaign, Madjer’s message is clear: the Fennecs must combine ambition with belief as they seek to create new memories to match their historic achievements.
