Algeria starlet Maza targets ‘great things’ at world cup

Ibrahim Maza has expressed confidence in Algeria’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, declaring that the national team possesses the quality and experience needed to make a major impact at the tournament.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who plays for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, spoke about Algeria’s ambitions only weeks before the competition begins in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Maza is expected to be part of coach Vladimir Petkovic’s squad after establishing himself as one of the key figures in Algeria’s midfield since making his international debut in 2024.

When discussing Algeria’s prospects at the tournament, the young playmaker said: “We have a very good group of players, as well as a veteran coach. We have enough time to prepare for the tournament, and I think we are capable of achieving great things.”

The midfielder also stressed that his immediate focus remains on club football with Leverkusen.

“However, at the moment I am focused on qualifying with Leverkusen for the Champions League, that is my current goal, and as for the World Cup there is plenty of time to prepare for it,” he added.

Maza Calls on Algerian Supporters

The Algeria international also delivered a message to supporters ahead of the team’s planned warm-up match against the Netherlands before the World Cup.

“We need the fans, I hope they will come to the Netherlands to support us, together we can achieve great things,” Maza said, according to La Gazette Du Fennec.

Algeria are preparing to face Netherlands national football team in a high-profile friendly as part of their final preparations for the tournament.

The fixture is expected to provide Petkovic with a significant test before Algeria begin their World Cup campaign.

First World Cup Appearance for Rising Midfielder

The 2026 tournament will mark Maza’s first appearance at a FIFA World Cup.

After already representing Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the midfielder is now preparing for football’s biggest international stage.

Born in Berlin, Maza has rapidly emerged as one of the most promising young Algerian players in European football.

His performances this season with Bayer Leverkusen have attracted widespread attention, particularly after contributing 12 goals and assists across all competitions.

The player’s technical quality and tactical maturity have reportedly placed him on the radar of several major European clubs.

According to reports, Manchester City FC, FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid have all shown interest in the Algerian international and have opened discussions with Bayer Leverkusen regarding a possible transfer.

Maza’s Value Continues to Rise

Maza’s growing reputation has also been reflected in his market valuation.

According to Transfermarkt estimates cited in the report, the midfielder is currently valued at €40m, making him the highest-valued Algerian footballer currently playing abroad.

There is reportedly a strong belief within Bayer Leverkusen that Maza is approaching another major stage in his development, particularly given the increasing number of offers and enquiries surrounding him.

Club officials are said to recognise that retaining the player could become increasingly difficult if his rapid progress continues.

A strong performance at the World Cup could further elevate his reputation and potentially open the door to one of Europe’s elite clubs, as the young midfielder prepares for what could become the defining summer of his career.
