Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean has ruled out the prospect of Karim Benzema returning to his boyhood club, describing the speculation surrounding a reunion as “more noise than reality”.
The French club explored the possibility of bringing the former Ballon d’Or winner back during the summer transfer window, but contractual complications linked to his time in Saudi Arabia prevented the move from progressing.
Speaking to France TV, Louis-Jean dismissed suggestions that Lyon had come close to securing the striker’s services.
“Benzema, was it close? No, it wasn’t close to becoming reality,” he said.
“Of course, like you, I heard what was said on social media. I know there was a problem getting out of his contract in Saudi Arabia, but no, it was more noise than reality. I don’t believe it was feasible in any way.”
Benzema, 38, began his professional career at Lyon before joining Real Madrid in 2009, where he established himself as one of the leading forwards of his generation and won the 2022 Ballon d’Or.
Despite his connection to the French club, the proposed return failed to materialise because of the contractual difficulties surrounding his Saudi Arabian commitments.
With a reunion now appearing unlikely, Lyon are reportedly exploring other options to strengthen their attack ahead of the January transfer window.
North Macedonia international Elmin Rastoder has emerged as a potential target, with reports indicating that the French side retain an interest in the Panathinaikos striker.
Rastoder joined the Greek club from Swiss side Thun in June 2026 on a four-year contract after an impressive season in which he recorded 15 goals and six assists across 36 appearances, according to Panathinaikos’ announcement.
However, Lyon’s reported interest remains speculative, with no confirmed agreement or formal offer publicly established.
For now, the French club’s priority appears to be identifying a realistic attacking reinforcement rather than pursuing a Benzema reunion that Louis-Jean says was never close to completion.
