Roma have officially renewed Lorenzo Pellegrini’s contract until June 2027, several weeks after the midfielder’s previous agreement with the club had expired.
Pellegrini’s former deal ended on 30 June, leaving him a free agent. However, the Italy international remained in talks with Roma throughout the period and has now committed his future to the Giallorossi with a new agreement announced by the club this afternoon.
Roma described the deal as a contract ‘extension’ in their official statement, although that wording is not strictly accurate because Pellegrini’s previous contract had already run out.
The 29-year-old has spent almost his entire career with Roma. He came through the club’s youth academy before making his first-team breakthrough and later returned to the capital following a two-year spell with Sassuolo.
Pellegrini had been linked with a possible move to Juventus after becoming a free agent and was also approached by Besiktas. Despite that interest, he chose to remain with Roma and continue his long association with the club.
The new agreement brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding his immediate future. Although negotiations continued after his previous contract expired, Roma had always remained in discussions with their captain over a new deal.
A similar situation occurred with Paulo Dybala, whose contract arrangements with Roma also involved an agreement being completed after the previous deal had ended. Roma had intended to follow the same route with Zeki Celik, but the defender ultimately joined Juventus as a free agent instead.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Pellegrini’s new contract is worth €2.5m per season, with the possibility of additional performance-related bonuses. The terms are reported to be similar to those agreed by Dybala.
Pellegrini’s return to Roma followed his brief period at Sassuolo, where he spent two seasons before going back to the club where he had developed as a player. Since then, he has remained closely associated with the Giallorossi.
Roma’s announcement confirms that relationship will continue through June 2027, despite the unusual timing of the agreement after his previous contract had already expired.
