Lorch leads the way as South Africa overseas stars shine

South Africa footballers delivered a series of notable performances for their respective clubs across multiple leagues over the weekend, with several players contributing goals, assists and key appearances.

Thembinkosi Lorch produced one of the most eye-catching displays, registering both a goal and an assist as Al Ittihad Tripoli secured a convincing 4-1 victory over Abu Salim in the Libyan Cup. The match marked the first official game in charge for coach Rulani Mokwena, and his side began strongly with a dominant performance.

Lorch, who previously starred for Wydad Casablanca, has been in impressive form in recent weeks. His latest contribution brings his tally to three goals and two assists in just six appearances across all competitions, underlining his growing influence within the team.

Elsewhere in Europe, Luther Singh also found the back of the net in Cyprus, helping AEL Limassol to a comfortable 3-0 league win over Omonia Aradippou. His goal played a part in maintaining his side’s strong showing in the domestic competition.

In Austria, Antonio van Wyk contributed with an assist as Ried edged a closely contested 3-2 victory against Altach. Fellow South African Yusuf Maart featured prominently in the same match, completing the full 90 minutes as his side secured the win.

There was also a return to action for Luke Le Roux in England’s Championship. The midfielder played the entire match, marking his comeback after an absence of eight games. His return offers a boost to his club as the season progresses.

In Germany, Ime Okon was given time on the pitch, featuring for 45 minutes as Hannover 96 played out a 1-1 draw against Elversberg.

South African players were also active in the Middle East. Elias Mokwana played 88 minutes for Al Hazem, although his side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Al Ittihad. Similarly, Mohau Nkota completed 88 minutes for Al Ettifaq, contributing to their 3-2 victory over Al Qadsiah.

Across the Atlantic in Major League Soccer, several players were involved in weekend fixtures. Mbekezeli Mbokazi played the full match as Chicago Fire secured a slender 1-0 win over Nashville SC. However, Puso Dithejane remained an unused substitute during the encounter.

Olwethu Makhanya also completed 90 minutes for Philadelphia Union, despite his side suffering a 2-1 loss to Charlotte. Meanwhile, Bongokuhle Hlongwane made a brief appearance as Minnesota United claimed a 2-1 victory over LA Galaxy.

Overall, the weekend highlighted the continued presence and contribution of South African players across leagues worldwide, with several individuals playing decisive roles for their teams.
