Lookman strike sends Atletico past Barcelona in Champions League thriller

Atletico Madrid have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in nine years despite suffering a 2-1 defeat by Barcelona in a dramatic second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Diego Simeone’s side progressed 3-2 on aggregate, with Ademola Lookman’s first-half goal proving decisive in a tie that swung dramatically over the course of the evening.

Holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg at the Camp Nou, Atletico Madrid were widely expected to see out the contest comfortably on home soil. However, Barcelona made a blistering start that immediately put the hosts under pressure.

Teenager Lamine Yamal stunned the home crowd by opening the scoring just four minutes into the match, taking advantage of a defensive lapse to finish past goalkeeper Juan Musso. The early goal injected belief into the visitors and set the tone for an intense encounter.

Barcelona continued to push forward and found a second goal in the 24th minute. Ferran Torres met a well-timed through ball and produced a clinical finish into the top corner, drawing the tie level on aggregate and shifting momentum firmly in the visitors’ favour.

With Atletico struggling to regain control, they needed a response to steady their campaign—and it arrived before half-time. In the 31st minute, Marcos Llorente advanced down the right wing and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Lookman reacted quickest, beating his defender and calmly finishing at the far post to restore Atletico’s aggregate lead.

The goal proved pivotal, halting Barcelona’s surge and reigniting the home support.

After the break, Barcelona dominated possession as midfielders Pedri and Gavi dictated play, probing for openings against a disciplined Atletico defence. The visitors believed they had found a crucial third goal, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Their challenge became more difficult in the closing stages when Eric Garcia was sent off following a last-man challenge, reducing Barcelona to ten men and limiting their attacking options.

Despite continued pressure and a tense finish, Atletico held on to secure their place in the final four of Europe’s premier club competition.

Lookman’s contribution ultimately proved to be the turning point across the two legs, ensuring Simeone’s side advanced despite defeat on the night.

Atletico will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals as they continue their pursuit of a first Champions League title.
