Lookman ready for Barcelona Champions League test

Atletico Madrid will look to shift the balance in their rivalry with Barcelona when the two sides meet in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, with winger Ademola Lookman expected to play a pivotal role.

The Nigerian international heads into the contest aiming to help his side secure a valuable result at the Spotify Camp Nou, as Atletico pursue a place in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition.

The Madrid side face a significant challenge, having already lost three of their four meetings with Barcelona this season.

Lookman, who joined Atletico in January, has already experienced mixed fortunes against the Catalan club. He featured in two earlier encounters, recording one victory and one defeat. His most notable contribution came during Atletico’s commanding 4-0 win in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, where he scored and provided an assist in an impressive display.

However, replicating that performance has proved difficult. Barcelona responded emphatically in the return leg of that tie with a 3-0 victory, limiting Lookman’s influence. More recently, he did not feature in their La Liga meeting, which Barcelona won 2-1.

Those results underline the scale of the task facing Atletico as they attempt to overturn their recent record against their rivals. Despite this, Diego Simeone’s side remain determined to change the narrative and keep their Champions League ambitions alive.

Since his arrival from Atalanta, Lookman has made an immediate impact in the Spanish capital. The winger has registered five goals and four assists in 14 appearances across all competitions, adding a new dimension to Atletico’s attacking play. His pace and creativity have helped improve the team’s effectiveness in the final third.

With a place in the last four on the line, Atletico will be keen to produce a strong performance away from home before hosting the decisive second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano next week. Securing a positive result in Barcelona could prove crucial to their chances of progression.

For Lookman, the fixture presents another opportunity to demonstrate his growing importance within the squad. Having already shown he can influence high-stakes matches, the Nigerian winger will be eager to deliver once again on one of football’s biggest stages.

As Atletico prepare for the encounter, the focus will be on whether they can overcome recent setbacks against Barcelona and take a decisive step towards the semi-finals.
