Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has described Atlético Madrid’s upcoming Champions League semi-final against Arsenal as deeply emotional, as both sides prepare for a decisive encounter in Europe’s top club competition.
The first leg is set to take place at Atlético’s home ground, the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, with the Spanish club aiming to secure an advantage against one of the tournament’s strongest remaining teams.
Lookman, who arrived at Atlético Madrid during the winter transfer window, has quickly become an influential figure within the squad. The 26-year-old has made a notable contribution in European competition this season, registering two goals and two assists in six appearances.
Among those contributions was a decisive strike in the quarter-final second leg against FC Barcelona, underlining his growing importance in crucial moments.
Speaking ahead of the semi-final, Lookman acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing Atlético, describing Arsenal as one of the toughest opponents left in the competition.
“They are a very tough opponent, a top team, we have to be ready to fight,” Lookman stated.
“It’s the Champions League semi-finals, there are no easy opponents at this stage. It will be a very tough match.”
Beyond the sporting challenge, the fixture also carries personal significance for the forward, who spent part of his early life in London. He reflected on the emotional aspect of facing a club from the city where he developed as a young player.
“For me, it’s emotional. I grew up in London. The first time was with Charlton, when I was a kid. Being from London, it’s a very special match. What I want is to win,” he added.
Lookman’s availability is a timely boost for Atlético manager Diego Simeone. The attacker recently returned from injury after missing time following the club’s defeat in the Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad.
His return strengthens Atlético’s attacking options at a critical stage of the season, as Simeone looks to guide the club to Champions League glory. With domestic silverware already out of reach, the European campaign now represents their primary opportunity to secure a major trophy.
As anticipation builds ahead of the semi-final, Lookman’s blend of form, experience, and personal motivation could prove pivotal in determining whether Atlético can progress to the final.
