Liverpool could bring in two wingers before the transfer window closes if Cody Gakpo completes a move to Tottenham, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The possibility of Gakpo leaving Anfield is central to Liverpool’s current planning. Should the Netherlands forward join Tottenham, the club may respond by recruiting two players in his position rather than making a single replacement signing.
Liverpool are continuing discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, with the French winger remaining one of the club’s targets. However, their interest may not end with Barcola. A second transfer is also being considered as part of the potential reshaping of the squad.
Ibrahim Mbaye is understood to be another name on Liverpool’s list. At present, though, the club regard the player as too expensive, meaning a move for him is not currently viewed as straightforward.
The decisions surrounding Gakpo, Barcola and Mbaye are linked to Liverpool’s wider transfer plans. Liverpool’s willingness to allow Gakpo to join Tottenham depends on whether the forward’s departure prompts the club to strengthen with two new wingers.
No confirmation has been given that Gakpo will leave Liverpool, nor that either Barcola or Mbaye will move to Anfield. The current situation remains dependent on negotiations and the possibility of a deal taking shape before the end of the transfer window.
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League last season, collecting 60 points. The Reds will begin the new campaign with an away fixture against Newcastle United on 23 August.
The club’s plans for the attack could therefore become clearer if Gakpo’s proposed switch to Tottenham progresses. For now, Liverpool remain in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Barcola, while Mbaye is being considered but is regarded as too costly. The potential arrival of two wingers is tied specifically to the condition that Gakpo departs for Tottenham.
