Liverpool FC have strongly criticised racist abuse directed at defender Ibrahima Konaté following their emphatic victory over Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.
The Premier League side progressed to the quarter-finals, sealing a 4-1 aggregate triumph.
However, the result has been overshadowed by online attacks targeting Konaté in the aftermath of the match.
Liverpool moved quickly to defend their player, issuing a firm statement condemning the abuse, which included racist messages shared on social media platforms.
“Our players are not targets. They are human beings.
“The abuse that continues to be directed at players, often hidden behind anonymous accounts, is a stain on the game and on the platforms that allow it to persist.”
The club also described the behaviour as “dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate,” and reiterated that such actions are “utterly unacceptable.”
Konaté had been involved in several key moments during the game, including an early collision with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
The incident resulted in a serious injury for the Galatasaray forward, who was later diagnosed with a fractured arm and replaced at half-time.
The clash appeared to be a turning point in the match, with Liverpool maintaining control and eventually running out comfortable winners.
Konaté continued to play a significant role defensively, while also being involved in other tense exchanges on the pitch, including a confrontation involving Noa Lang and a separate incident near the goalmouth with Mauro Icardi.
Despite his contribution to the victory, the defender became the focus of online abuse after the final whistle.
Reports indicate that some individuals posted offensive content, including racist imagery and language, following the match.
Meanwhile, Osimhen’s injury has raised concerns for Galatasaray, with the striker now facing a period on the sidelines.
He is expected to wait for swelling to subside before a decision is made on whether surgery is required. Should an operation be necessary, the 27-year-old could be out for approximately six weeks.
The potential absence represents a major blow for the Turkish club, with Osimhen likely to miss several important fixtures, including matches against Trabzonspor, Kocaelispor and Gençlerbirliği.
His availability for a key clash with Fenerbahçe on 26 April also remains uncertain.
