Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth an initial £106m, with the total potentially rising to £123m through performance-related bonuses.
The 23-year-old France international has signed a five-year contract with Liverpool, giving manager Andoni Iraola another major attacking option and strengthening the club’s forward line.
Barcola becomes the second-most expensive player in Liverpool’s history. Only Alexander Isak, who joined from Newcastle United for £125m last summer, has cost more.
The transfer concludes a long pursuit by Liverpool, with Barcola making it clear throughout the summer that he wanted to move to Anfield. The winger reportedly rejected the possibility of exploring other options because he was determined to leave Paris Saint-Germain and secure more regular first-team football.
Barcola wore the number 29 shirt during his time at Paris Saint-Germain and will retain that number at Liverpool. He played 49 matches last season, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists. He also made eight appearances for France at the World Cup, scoring three times.
Although Barcola played an important role in Paris Saint-Germain’s recent success, competition for places in the club’s attack made it increasingly difficult for him to establish himself as a regular starter. He leaves after winning the Ligue 1 title and the UEFA Champions League twice in consecutive seasons.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Barcola said: “It is a great honour to play for Liverpool. I am very happy.”
He added: “It took a long time, but I am very happy today because I am playing for Liverpool, and all I want is to be on the pitch and take part in matches.”
Barcola also outlined his main ambition at his new club, saying: “I hope to achieve great things, first of all winning the Premier League, because it is one of the biggest dreams in my life.”
He said: “I aspire to achieve that and stay in this team for the long term, which is why I signed a long-term contract, and I hope I can do that.”
The move makes Barcola Liverpool’s third permanent signing of the summer, following Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet. Ronald Araujo has also joined on a season-long loan from Barcelona.
Liverpool are not expected to make further additions to their first-team squad before the transfer window closes, unless there is an unexpected departure.
Manchester City are interested in signing Cody Gakpo, who operates on the left wing, the position Barcola prefers. A move for Gakpo would therefore be the main circumstance likely to prompt Liverpool to return to the market before the deadline.
Barcola’s arrival represents a significant investment in Liverpool’s attack and gives him the opportunity he had been seeking to play more consistently at the highest level of English football. His immediate target is to help the club challenge for the Premier League title, while his long-term contract underlines his intention to make Anfield his home for years to come.
