Liverpool academic highlights Salah’s power beyond the game

Mohamed Salah’s Global Influence Extends Beyond Football, Says Liverpool Academic

Salah’s legacy viewed beyond the pitch

A lecturer from the University of Liverpool has said that Mohamed Salah has evolved into a global cultural figure whose influence extends far beyond football.

Leon Moussaoui, a sociology academic at the institution, argued that the Egyptian forward’s impact transcends sport, positioning him as an international icon with wider cultural and humanitarian resonance.

Speaking in comments reported by the BBC, Moussaoui highlighted Salah’s significance in a divided global landscape, suggesting the player represents a unifying source of inspiration.

“Moussaoui explained, in statements reported by the BBC, that Salah represents a source of inspiration at a time of political divisions, noting that his influence goes beyond being a football player, thanks to his presence as a prominent Arab figure on the global stage.”

Symbolism and cultural identity

According to Moussaoui, Salah’s unique standing is rooted not only in his footballing achievements but also in the symbolic elements associated with his public image.

He identified three key factors contributing to this influence: the recognition of Salah’s name worldwide, his goal celebration involving prostration, and the visibility of his family life — particularly his wife’s appearance wearing the hijab — which collectively project a clear cultural identity to a global audience.

These elements, Moussaoui suggested, have allowed Salah to resonate with diverse audiences, elevating him beyond the conventional boundaries of a professional athlete.

End of an era at Liverpool

The comments come amid confirmation that Salah will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the current season, bringing to a close a highly successful nine-year spell at Anfield.

During his time with the club, the Egyptian forward made 435 appearances across all competitions. He scored 255 goals and registered 122 assists, establishing himself as one of the most prolific and influential players in the club’s history.

Salah played a central role in one of Liverpool’s most successful modern periods, helping the team secure major honours. Among these were two Premier League titles, as well as victories in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, and three English League Cups, alongside the Community Shield.

A lasting impact on and off the field

His departure is widely seen as marking the end of a significant chapter for Liverpool, with Salah credited for helping restore the club to consistent success at the highest level of European and domestic football.

Beyond statistics and silverware, however, Moussaoui’s analysis underscores a broader legacy — one that blends sporting excellence with cultural representation and global visibility.

As Salah prepares to conclude his time at Liverpool, his influence appears set to endure not only in footballing terms but also in the wider social and cultural arenas where his presence has carried considerable weight.

 More than a footballer

Mohamed Salah’s journey at Liverpool may be nearing its conclusion, but his impact continues to resonate far beyond the pitch. As both a sporting icon and a cultural figure, his legacy reflects a rare combination of achievement, identity, and global influence.
