Lille held by Brest as Giroud penalty denies visitors victory

Lille missed the chance to move top of Ligue 1 after being held to a 1-1 draw by Stade Brestois at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, with Olivier Giroud’s penalty rescuing a point for the hosts.

The result means Les Dogues have lost only once in their opening seven league matches this season, with four wins and two draws. Their unbeaten home run in Ligue 1 has now reached four matches, and the point moved them above AS Monaco into second place.

Brest made the stronger start after arriving in northern France on the back of a 5-1 home victory over Angers. They took the lead after only six minutes when Mama Balde turned a strange ricochet past Orlando Gill.

Joris Chotard’s floated corner caused confusion in the Lille penalty area. Gautier Lloris’ scuffed effort struck Balde and changed direction, leaving Gill wrong-footed as the ball flew into the net.

Balde’s goal was his second in a week, but it proved to be the only effort on target in a flat first half. Brest were dealt a further setback at the interval when Balde was forced off because of an injury.

His departure appeared to benefit Lille, who began the second half with greater urgency. Egil Selvik kept out Benjamin Andre’s header, before Tanguy Nianzou headed wide from six yards as the home side pressed for an equaliser.

Brest increasingly looked prepared to defend their lead, and Lille were given the opportunity to level in the 64th minute. Bradley Locko caught Ethan Mbappe with a clumsy challenge, leaving referee Clement Turpin with no option but to award a penalty.

Giroud took responsibility and converted to score his first goal since the opening weekend of the season. The equaliser gave Lille fresh momentum as they pushed for a winner, but Brest’s defence remained firm.

Selvik produced an acrobatic save to keep out Nabil Bentaleb’s free-kick, ensuring the points were shared. The goalkeeper was named Flashscore Man of the Match for Brest.

The draw continued Brest’s progress under Julien Lachuer. They have suffered only one defeat in four away Ligue 1 matches so far in the 2026/27 campaign.
