Bayer Leverkusen boosted their hopes of securing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League with a convincing 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, as Nathan Tella scored his first Bundesliga goal of the 2025/26 campaign.
The Nigerian forward played a key role in the dominant performance at the BayArena, contributing both a goal and an assist as Leverkusen climbed into fourth place, overtaking VfB Stuttgart in the standings.
Tella, who has been in strong form in recent matches, made an early impact by setting up Patrik Schick for the opening goal in the 25th minute. The Czech striker converted the opportunity to give the hosts the lead.
The 26-year-old forward then added his own name to the scoresheet just before the interval, finishing from close range in the 45th minute to double Leverkusen’s advantage and register his first league goal of the season.
Schick continued his impressive display in the second half, completing his hat-trick with further strikes in the 76th and 89th minutes. Leipzig briefly threatened a comeback when Christoph Baumgartner scored in the 80th minute, but the goal proved to be only a consolation.
The result marks an important step for Leverkusen as they intensify their push for a top-four finish. The team, managed by Xabi Alonso, delivered a composed and clinical performance to secure all three points.
Tella’s contribution takes his tally to one goal and six assists in 17 league appearances this season, highlighting his growing importance to the side. He has now started each of Leverkusen’s last five Bundesliga matches, underlining his increasing consistency in the team.
His season, however, has not been without challenges. The Nigerian international missed the first seven matches of the campaign due to a knee injury and was later sidelined for a further eight games with a foot problem. These setbacks significantly limited his involvement earlier in the season.
Now fully fit, Tella appears to be regaining momentum at a crucial stage. His recent performances suggest he is rediscovering the form that has made him a valuable asset for both club and country, including his role with the Super Eagles.
With the season entering its decisive phase, Leverkusen will be encouraged by Tella’s return to form as they seek to maintain their position in the top four and secure qualification for European competition next term.
