Leverkusen back Boniface with new deal as striker focuses on recovery

There is growing confidence at Bayer Leverkusen that striker Victor Boniface will play a key role in the club’s future, despite the Nigerian forward currently being sidelined with injury.

The 25-year-old is undergoing rehabilitation after a knee problem curtailed his recent loan spell at Werder Bremen.

While he remains out of action, the Bundesliga side are understood to have already agreed terms with the player to extend his stay at the club.

Boniface’s current contract runs until 2028, but the reported move to secure him on fresh terms highlights Leverkusen’s continued belief in his ability and long-term value.

The striker’s absence has been felt on the pitch, where his physical presence and attacking contributions have become a defining feature of Leverkusen’s play. However, the club appears keen to look beyond his current setback, focusing instead on what he has already delivered since arriving in Germany.

Boniface joined Leverkusen three years ago from Union Saint-Gilloise, initially with little fanfare outside Belgian football circles. Since then, he has developed into a key attacking figure, scoring 32 goals and providing 12 assists in 61 appearances.

Those figures underline not only his ability to find the net but also his importance in linking play and contributing across the forward line.

His recent injury, sustained during a short and disrupted spell at Bremen, temporarily halted his momentum. Rather than returning immediately to first-team action upon his comeback, Boniface has instead focused on regaining full fitness at Leverkusen’s training facilities.

Sources suggest that the club’s decision to extend his contract is not simply a reward for past performances, but a strategic move aimed at ensuring stability in their attacking options for the future.

At 25, Boniface is widely seen as entering the prime years of his career.
