The Lesotho senior national football team, Likuena, has received financial backing and renewed institutional support following their recent victory over Seychelles, which secured their place in the group stage qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
At a celebratory dinner held on Monday at Lesotho Avani, the president of the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA), Mr Lijane Nthunya, confirmed that each player in the squad would receive a cash reward. The announcement came during an event hosted by Member of Parliament for the Thaba Bosiu Constituency and Lekope FM owner, Mr Isaac Malebaleba.
Mr Nthunya disclosed that the players would each receive M1000, funded by SIMA Communications through a pledge made by its representative, Mr Sipho Masholugu. The gesture was presented as recognition of the team’s achievement and commitment.
“We made a promise to you that LeFA working together with our Ministry will reward you once you have qualified for the group stage and now, I tell you that, you have the right get that money,” LeFA President said.
He further highlighted the contribution from the private sector, adding: “On top of that, as you heard me saying that this event has been graced by Lijabatho President, Mr Sipho Masholugu from SIMA Communications, who has been impressed by your efforts and has made a contribution to give each and every player in the squad M1000.
“Now you can see that when you show commitment and humility in your work, the hard work gets rewarded and my request to you is to continue to make Basotho proud and more good things will come your way.”
The event also saw the involvement of government officials, signalling broader support for the national team as they prepare for the next stage of the competition. The Minister of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture, Honourable Motlatsi Maqelepo, indicated that additional financial assistance would be provided ahead of the qualifiers, although specific figures were not disclosed.
“President, I don’t want to announce today how much I’m going to give you for the CAF group stage, but there is somewhere im going to tap and we will have another platform like this to make that announcement, I will announce how much I’m going to give you” Honorouble Maqelepo said.
Beyond financial incentives, the minister also outlined plans to improve the country’s sporting infrastructure. He expressed a commitment to restoring Setsoto Stadium so that it can once again host international matches, noting ongoing collaboration with football authorities.
“But I want to tell you, working hand in hand with ntate Nthunya and ntate Baba and others, we have a full budget, and we will work together to make sure that Setsoto returns to meet the required standard.”
The announcements reflect growing optimism around Lesotho’s football prospects, with both public and private stakeholders signalling their intention to invest in the team’s continued progress. Likuena’s qualification has not only boosted national pride but also attracted tangible backing as preparations begin for the upcoming Afcon group stage qualifiers.
