Lazio maintain joint Serie A lead with emphatic win at Juventus

Lazio strengthened their position at the top of Serie A with a convincing 3-0 victory over Juventus in Turin, as Denmark internationals Oliver Provstgaard and Gustav Isaksen put the visitors in control before Fisayo Dele-Bashiru completed the scoring.

The result keeps Lazio level with Inter, while Juventus suffered another disappointing league performance after a 2-1 Europa League comeback win at Celta Vigo on Thursday. The Bianconeri had won only one of their previous four Serie A matches before this defeat.

Juventus were without Kenan Yildiz, Manuel Locatelli, Khephren Thuram, Jeff Ekhator and Kamil Grabara, with Jeremie Bogaback among the substitutes. Head coach Luciano Spalletti was serving a touchline ban after his altercation with Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane, so assistant Marco Domenichini took charge from the bench.

Lazio needed victory to remain joint leaders, but were missing Albert Gudmundsson, Matteo Cancellieri, Nicolo Rovella, Alessio Furlanetto and Adam Marusic.

Juventus thought they had taken the lead when Randal Kolo Muani found the net after 24 minutes, but the goal was ruled out because he had strayed offside when Nico Gonzalez flicked the ball on. Kolo Muani then narrowly failed to reach Gonzalez’s free-kick at the far post.

Gonzalez was also frustrated after going down near the edge of the Lazio penalty area without receiving a free-kick. He had accidentally made contact with Kenneth Taylor as the two players crossed paths.

Lazio went ahead shortly afterwards. Gustav Isaksen’s curling effort was deflected behind, and the resulting corner was taken short before Mattia Zaccagni delivered into the area. Oliver Provstgaard met the cross with a glancing header from six yards, sending it between Gleison Bremer and Jhon Lucumi.

The visitors almost extended their advantage when a Nuno Tavares cross took a heavy deflection off Bremer, looped over the goalkeeper and bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Juventus introduced Nick Woltemade for the ineffective Kerim Alajbegovic at half-time and switched to a 4-4-2 formation. Woltemade was soon involved, but could only prod Kolo Muani’s low cross wide of the near post.

Kolo Muani later supplied Gonzalez, whose angled effort missed the target, while Pierre Kalulu diverted a powerful strike from Tavares behind for a corner.

Lazio doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Isaksen controlled Tavares’ cross-field pass, used a run from Romano Floriani Mussolini to draw Zeki Celik away, then cut inside and curled a left-footed shot into the far bottom corner.

Juventus could not build a response. Bosko Sutalo stopped a Kalulu cross from reaching Woltemade, and Kolo Muani headed over after Woltemade had managed to keep the ball in near the by-line.

Francisco Conceicao’s predictable curling attempt was comfortably dealt with by Christos Mandas, before Dele-Bashiru settled the contest in the 89th minute. The substitute carried the ball from inside his own half and finished with an angled drive beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

The victory was Lazio’s first in Serie A at Juventus since October 2017.
