Lazio captain Zaccagni faces up to four weeks out with thigh injury

Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni is expected to miss three to four weeks after initial tests revealed a muscular lesion in his left thigh.

The Serie A leaders will be without their captain for at least this weekend’s match against Napoli, while he is also very likely to miss the following fixture against Lecce.

Zaccagni was forced off during Lazio’s 2-1 win over Cagliari at the weekend. The injury was initially thought to be a minor knock, but reports from Sky Sport Italia and other outlets say examinations have detected damage to the muscle.

Further tests will be needed to determine the full extent of the injury. However, this type of problem generally requires a recovery period of between three and four weeks.

Zaccagni has played 10 Serie A matches for Lazio this season, contributing two goals and five assists.

The injury is a setback for Lazio, who have emerged as the surprise leaders of the division. After 10 rounds, the Aquile are three points clear at the top of the table, having moved away from Inter and the rest of the chasing teams.

There was some positive news for coach Gennaro Gattuso, with Adam Marusic and Nicolo Rovella returning to training on the same day for the first time in over two months.
