Langelihle Phili says joining Kaizer Chiefs has fulfilled a childhood ambition after the 21-year-old winger moved to the club from Stellenbosch.
The new Chiefs player says his decision was shaped by his family and the support Amakhosi have received in his home environment. He grew up following the club and is now determined to make the most of the opportunity at what is arguably the biggest club in the country.
“Everyone at home supports Amakhosi, so I thought it would be a good move for me to join the team I grew up supporting and being here feels like my dream has really come true.”
Phili’s arrival adds to the early sense of optimism around Kaizer Chiefs, who began the new season with a 3-1 victory over newcomers Kruger United.
The result gave Chiefs the maximum three points available and has encouraged supporters who are eager to see how the side develops under new manager Fernando da Cruz. In football, opinions can shift quickly, and one win has already generated excitement about the team’s approach under the new boss.
Flavio Silva opened the scoring against Kruger United, before substitute Wandile Duba changed the contest with two goals. Duba’s brace completed the 3-1 victory and provided Chiefs with a positive start to the campaign.
The match also included several notable selection decisions. Ethan Chislett started in the number 10 role, while Luke Baartman was deployed wide in attack. Their inclusion, alongside other unexpected starting choices, added to the interest surrounding Da Cruz’s plans for the season.
Vilakazi also claimed an assist in the win and will expect to retain his place when Chiefs return to action in the MTN8. The Glamour Boys face Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 9 August, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
That fixture will offer another indication of whether the attacking movement and confidence seen against Kruger United can be carried into a major cup match. Chiefs will hope their opening result provides momentum, while Golden Arrows will present a different challenge in the next stage of the campaign.
For Phili, however, the immediate focus is the significance of joining the club he supported while growing up. His move from Stellenbosch has given him the chance to play for a team that holds a special place in his family and community, while also placing him within a squad seeking to make a strong impression under Da Cruz.
The winger’s comments are likely to resonate with Kaizer Chiefs supporters, who will now be keen to see him make his mark in the famous gold and black colours.
